Breakfast Ideas for Baby

We have been doing baby led weaning for 2 months now and it’s been SO much fun. Truly, nothing has brought me more joy. I just love cooking for my son, and of course, watching him explore and eat food.

I know that sometimes coming up with meals can feel a bit daunting, so we’re rounding up some baby led weaning friendly breakfast ideas for baby for when you need some inspiration on what to feed your hungry little guy or gal!

PSA – My most favorite baby led weaning resource is absolutely anything by Solid Starts. Their IG, their bundles, and their app are all pure gold!! Highly highly highly recommend.

This post is all about breakfast ideas for baby!

Typically it’s some combination of produce, protein, and carb. Sometimes those overlap.

The majority of these breakfasts take me about 5 minutes to whip together. Sometimes it’s because I’ve prepped things ahead of time, sometimes it’s because I try to go simple and easy whenever possible. My baby eats a TON, and I work from home, so cooking from scratch 100% of his meals just isn’t realistic for me.

I rotate through a few different things for breakfast. I always serve a fruit or a vegetable, sometimes both! Current favorites are blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers and tomatoes. I will rotate around those and add some new things in too.

I usually try to include at least ONE thing I know he likes, just to ensure he has something he definitely will eat. We are lucky, so far he’s open to trying anything new though. I doubt that will last!

Sometimes the fruit/veggie is served in a muffin or pancake! When I’m able to prep ahead of time or cook at meal time, I will whip something like that up.

Some we’ve done are:

  • Apple fritter pancakes: shredded apple with juice squeezed out, 1 egg, 1/4 cup milk of choice, 1/4 cup flour mixed together and scoop onto non-stick pan with a little cooking spray until cooked on both sides.
  • Green muffins: blend 2 ripe bananas, handful of spinach, 1 cup of baby oatmeal (we use this one), 1 tsp baking powder, 2 eggs, 1/3 water to help blend everything together (you might need less). Bake at 350 for 35 minutes until the edges get lightly brown.
  • Banana oatmeal pancakes: blend or mash together 2 eggs, 4 servings baby oatmeal (we use this one), 1 banana, sprinkle of cinnamon, tsp baking soda and cook on non-stick pan until cooked on both sides.
  • Berry banana oat muffins: this recipe
  • Carrot banana oat muffins: same recipe as above but I added shredded carrot instead of berries and a big scoop of cottage cheese
  • Green pancakes: this recipe, using the fluffy spinach pancake option

So far all of these freeze and reheat really well! They’re all either quick to make or quick to reheat (and quick to throw the ingredients together.) Win win!

Plenty of these have protein in them, so I just call it a day!

For other forms of protein we are cottage cheese, yogurt, scrambled eggs (with cheese, cottage cheese, pesto, etc.), yogurt, Kodiak waffles/pancakes, egg white frittata cups from Costco and chicken sausage from Costco. I’m sure we’ll expand these soon as we keep trying things. I’d love to prep some egg veggie cups for him! But those egg white frittatas are great for now.

If neither of his fruit/veggie or protein was also a carby kinda thing, I’ll include some toast. He really loves toast! I usually do Ezekiel bread or english muffins with a little bit of butter. He’s also had the whole grain waffles from Trader Joe’s and loved those.

That’s pretty much it! We keep things nice and simple. Works for him, works for us! We’ve lucked into a really good eater, and for that I’m so thankful!

As we continue in our baby led weaning journey, I’ll be sure to add plenty more breakfast ideas for baby as they happen.
