Wondering what the ideal baby room temperature is and how you can make sure you’re keeping it there for your little one? This $9 Amazon gadget will be a game changer for you!

baby room temperature

Figuring out the ideal baby room temperature was something that stressed me out as a new mom. Felt a little like Goldilocks since it couldn’t be too cold or too hot, had to be just right! It was seriously keeping me up at night trying to figure out if the temperature was perfect, or if it could be what was disrupting his sleep. Finally I feel like I’ve figured it out!

This post is all about the ideal baby room temperature and how to double check it.

First things first…ideal baby room temperature:

From everything I’ve read, your baby’s room should be between 68-72 degrees.

Before having a baby I had no idea how much I’d be worrying about the temperature of my house and of specific rooms! Turns out it’s quite important.

Cold babies don’t sleep soundly and are often woken up by being too cold. Hot babies can be a much more dangerous thing, and overheating can be a cause of SIDS. Hello stress!

Our master bedroom is an attic converted to a bedroom and the air flow is really poor. It gets way too hot really quickly, so many months ago we installed a window A/C unit to help keep it cool. Otherwise we were constantly running the A/C to try and get upstairs to cool off and downstairs was absolutely freezing.

(and baby is currently sleeping upstairs with us in a bedside bassinet)

My husband and I prefer to sleep on the colder side, so we have the A/C unit set to 67 or so, but how do you even know if that’s what temperature the room is?! The thermostat is downstairs and I’m pretty sure the temperature it’s telling me the house is is just for downstairs.

I was finding myself feeling really stressed about not knowing the exact temperature of the room because not knowing that meant not knowing how I could dress him for sleep. I thought he was too cold, but then when I dressed him warmer I was SO nervous he was going to overheat. I ended up waking him up and changing his outfit because I didn’t want to risk it.

Easy solution to know the baby room temperature? Get a thermostat!

Yep, little thermostat has brought me SO so much peace of mind. Now I always know the exact temperature of the room and so I can dress him properly for naps and sleep at night. It’s been a game changer for me personally!

Grab your thermostat here! Super affordable, but priceless in my opinion.

Okay…so you know the temperature of the room…how are you supposed to dress them?!

The typical rule of thumb is that baby should be in one more layer than you…but what kind of layer?

This guide from Tiny Transitions provides an easy to follow visual for how to dress your little one for sleep depending on the temperature of the room. I found this to be SUPER helpful and reassuring that I was dressing him appropriately.

Between the guide and the thermostat, I can sleep soundly knowing my baby is at a comfortable temperature for him, and hopefully he can sleep a bit more soundly as well!
