Absolutely Everything You Need To Know About Throwing or Attending a Sip and See Party!
What is a Sip and See?
Some of you might be wondering what even is a sip and see! I definitely was until recently. It’s a newer concept for sure!
Essentially, it’s a much more casual gathering compared to a baby shower, held after baby is already born, so that friends and family can meet the new family member. Can be done instead of a baby shower or in addition to.
Major pro – check lots of baby visits off in one go! Can help to reduce the new mom and dad feeling like they have to host lots of guests after baby is born in their home, and hopefully also reduce those unexpected visits as well.
Low key event where light beverages and snacks are offered and generally is just for family members and friends to meet the new baby. Can be a short event, or done in drop by fashion with a window of time.
Who Hosts a Sip and See?
Up to the parents! Can be hosted by the new parents in their home or at another venue, or similar to a baby shower, by a close family member or friend.
Who To Invite To Your Sip and See?
Since you are still adjusting to life as a new parent and baby is still so little, I would suggest going smaller rather than larger with your invite list. Really think about who all feels important to you to meet your new little guy or gal.
If your guest list is feeling rather large, perhaps it’s worth considering having a few different sip and see events to keep things a little less overwhelming.
Should There Be a Registry for a Sip and See?
This should be discussed with mom and dad beforehand to see if they want gifts to be apart of their event.
Since it is a newer kind of party, guests are most likely unsure if gifts are expected or not. Make things clear by including something on the invitation about either option.
A quick Google search says no, but I don’t think people are familiar enough with these kinds of parties to know, so best to make things clear.
If you already had a baby shower with gifts though, it’s likely best to do no gifts, since anyone invited would have already gifted something to your little one.
No Gifts:
- We already have everything we need, so no need to bring a present.
- In lieu of gifts, please bring your favorite children’s book with a note inside for the new baby!

When to Have a Sip and See?
This should be determined by the new parents and what they’re most comfortable with, but most likely within the first 6 months of baby being born. No hard rule on this though! You might want to keep in consideration cold and flu season for timing. And probably give baby a few weeks to develop a bit of an immune system no matter what time of year (and for mom to have some recovery under her belt!)
Should a Sip and See be Indoors or Outdoors?
That should be up to the parents and be weather dependent. No set rule, but some parents might feel more comfortable with an outdoor event, if weather permits, to limit risk of germs spreading as much as possible.
What Should You Wear to a Sip and See?
Casual attire works best for this low key kind of event.
If you want to be super super clear, you could always throw something on the invitation about dress code!
Can You Hold the Baby at a Sip and See?
That’s going to be entirely up to mom and/or the parents.
It’s likely to be expected that others will hold the baby at the event, but not all parents feel super comfortable with passing around their new baby person after person.
I’d suggest taking a cue from mom and read her out to see what might be best. When in doubt, simply ask her if she’s comfortable with you holding the baby.
Should You Attend if You Are Not Feeling Well?
Alright, this is perhaps an obvious answer, but juuuust in case you’re not sure – big fat NO.
Baby will likely be very young and easily prone to getting sick. Even if you’re *sure* it’s allergies or just a little cold, that could turn into something much more serious for a new baby. Doesn’t matter if you RSVP’d yes and have to last minute cancel – mom and dad will thank you. They would much rather you not come and reschedule to meet their little one at a time where everyone is perfectly healthy.
Do You Need to RSVP for a Sip and See?
Up to the parents – double check your invitation for instructions. Some might prefer, but others might be keeping things super casual and drop by style, so an RSVP might not be as necessary.

Sip and See Decorations
Since this is typically a more casual kind of event, don’t feel you need to go overboard with decor. You could just print up and frame some pictures from those early first few days or weeks and use that as your decor! Or you could skip decor altogether, your call.

Sip and See Food Ideas
Remember, this is not a full blown baby shower. Totally okay to keep food and refreshments minimal! Pick a fun refreshment and a snack or two, and you’ll be set. Should be low key and casual, nothing to stress over.
Drinks could be coffee, tea, lemonade or iced tea. Maybe a fun mocktail or two.
Snacks can be kept to easy finger foods and appetizers. Cheese and crackers, chips and dip, nothing too extreme.
