We’ve all heard the horror stories of the first postpartum poop, but how bad is it really? And what can you do to get through it? Breaking all that down below!

first postpartum poop

Seems like something that is feared more than birth itself is often the first postpartum poop. Obviously, that experience is different for everyone. However, I was also one of those very scared women and now that I’ve gotten through to the other side, I’m sharing all the details. I mean…not all of them, but the important ones 😉

This post is all about the first postpartum poop.

If you had told me a year ago id be talking about poop on the internet id never believe you but here we are 😂 just trying to normalize talking about all this stuff! Moms gotta stick together! Also i recorded this a week or two after getting home look at my teeny baby #postpartumjourney

No matter what kind of labor experience you have, from no tearing whatsoever, to C-section, the first postpartum poop can be super intimidating. I’ve heard nothing but horrible stories about how it was worse than labor! I was super super nervous about what my experience was going to be like.

My labor was relatively uneventful. However, it did end with a 3rd degree tear, which only made me way more nervous for that first bathroom trip since I had basically an injury to my booty lol.

In the hospital they gave me both stool softeners and Miralax and I was instructed to keep that up at home. LISTEN TO THEM. Take it for a few weeks. Don’t stop after you have your first postpartum poop. Trust me.

I didn’t go at all while at the hospital, but literally the moment we got home my body was like okay it’s go time. I quickly handed the baby to my husband and went upstairs, sweating bullets.

I seriously had to psych myself up to sit down lol. I think I was even more afraid because the doctor who sewed me up made it sound like recovery was going to go horribly for me, and pooping was going to be a major issue. Real nice, right?

Finally, it was go time…..

And honestly, it wasn’t that bad! I was WAY more scared than I needed to be. Was it the most comfortable bathroom experience I ever had? Nope. But it was fine.

And that was with the stool softeners and Miralax not even fully kicked in yet if you know what I mean. To put it bluntly, the pregnancy constipation was not fully out of my system. So that likely would have been an uncomfortable bathroom experience with or without having just gone through labor, ya catch my drift?

I did cry from relief which caused my husband to rush upstairs to check on me lol, but I assured him all was okay.

I kept up the stool softeners and Miralax, as well as adding fiber powder. Daily I would have a Body Armor for hydration and because I heard they helped with breast milk supply, and I’d add in Miralax and the fiber powder. Couldn’t taste it at all! And I’m picky about that kinda stuff.

They all finally fully kicked in, and that helped all of the subsequent postpartum poops go super smoothly. They were a breeze!

I think the hype around this is way worse than it needs to be! Stay hydrated, TAKE THOSE PILLS, and you will be okay.

It might not be a completely painless experience! And of course, it’s going to be different for everyone. But I was truly terrified and I really didn’t need to be. So know that while it could be painful, you might end up with a not too bad experience as well. Crossing my fingers that’s what ends up happening for you!
