Pregnant and weird taste in mouth? That’s one pregnancy symptom I had no idea was a thing – did you? Sharing my experience below!

There are so many different weird pregnancy symptoms that pop up! I felt like every other week there was something new that had me wondering if it was normal. 9 times out of 10, it’s perfectly normal! Hormones are just a wild thing and cause a wide variety of changes and symptoms to happen within your body. One that lasted a while for me was dealing with a weird taste in my mouth!
Pregnant and weird taste in mouth? That’s what this post is all about!
The weird taste in my mouth pregnancy symptom came on pretty early, around 7 or so weeks. At that point I was still so early and it was my first pregnancy, I hadn’t fully realized just how many weird symptoms pop up throughout pregnancy. Definitely took me a few days to connect the dots that it was a symptom!

I had seen pregnant women talk about a metallic taste in their mouth, specifically as a very early sign of pregnancy, but this wasn’t that. Plus, it didn’t come up until 7 weeks, so it wasn’t a very early pregnancy sign for me.
It would come and go throughout the day. I was also dealing with pretty horrible nausea, but this seemed unrelated to that. Luckily, it didn’t make my nausea any worse when I did have the weird taste in my mouth.
I confirmed it was unrelated to my nausea because that fully subsided by 20 weeks, but this lasted my entire pregnancy (and beyond!!)
Eventually I connected the dots that it was brought on by anything even remotely sweet. Could be added sugars from candy or natural sugars from fruit. If it had even a hint of sweetness, it was leaving behind a horrible taste in my mouth.
For a period I could get it to go away with a mint, mini Altoids specifically, but eventually that didn’t work and I had to just ride it out.
It sucked because when my nausea was at its worse, apple slices and applesauce pouches were my savior. Had to give those up though because the bad taste they left behind made me had no appetite at all for them anymore. PS click here if you need ideas on foods that fight nausea during pregnancy.
It wasn’t my worst symptom (*cough cough* looking at you, nausea), but it was a very annoying one for sure.
I wondered if it had anything at all to do with my gestational diabetes, since that has to do with sugars as well, but likely not. Just my own personal conspiracy theory.
It didn’t even go away after I gave birth, at least not immediately. It took a week or two for my tastebuds to go back to normal and to be able to freely eat anything with sweetness to it without that awful side effect. Thank goodness!
