This post is all about gestational diabetes snacks!

Of course it is very person to person, and if you’ve been doing the gestational diabetes thing for a while you know it takes plenty of trial and error and even if you find a safe snack one week, it could end up spiking you the next! Such a mind game, right? But these were ones that remained safe for me time and time again. Fingers crossed they give you some new ideas to experiment with as well!

Warning – I do mention string cheese 😜

Gestational Diabetes Snack Ideas:

1. Kind Frozen Treat Bars

These were the most exciting find for sure. Essentially like a frozen snickers bar but with fiber and didn’t spike me! They’re vegan but don’t taste weird like some vegan ice creams/desserts can.

I typically found them at Target or Kroger. My favorite flavor was the dark chocolate almond sea salt and nut, but I didn’t try the mint one.

I usually paired them with a string cheese or two, but I think I would have been totally fine without doing so. Just usually did that to bulk up my snack a bit.

Here are the macros:

2. Cottage Cheese

Good Culture cottage cheese is the best brand imo. I usually went with the lower fat version due to preference. There are so many ways to add this in. I know the texture can be weird for some people, but you can always blend it!

Add ranch powder and make a dip, add sugar free pudding mix and make a protein pudding, add chopped up fruit and granola, tomatoes and pepper and olive oil, spread it on toast, etc. etc. TONS of ways to add this great protein source into your diet!

If you do a quick search on google or Pinterest for cottage cheese ideas you’ll find a bunch! I know it can be intimidating, but just give it a try. You might be surprised and it’s such an easy protein source!

3. Less Sugar Chobani Yogurts with Granola

I am really picky with sugar free things, so I was happy to find the less sugar Chobani Yogurts to try. Worked well with the Bear Naked sugar free granola, or the peanut butter protein one from Trader Joe’s.

4. Cheese Sticks

Wouldn’t be a list of gestational diabetes snacks without mentioning cheese, right? I enjoyed the pepper jack cheese sticks from Target and the mozzarella string cheese from Target (I thought those were the best ones, way better than Kraft!)

I usually had these alone or paired them with something else to bulk up or balance out the snack.

5. Apples with No Sugar Added Peanut Butter

I was nervous to add apples in (isn’t it annoying how we couldn’t easily have fruit with gd?!) but pairing them with no sugar peanut butter worked really well! I used the Jif brand and found it at Walmart and Target.

6. Cliff Mini Builders Bars

I always had these in my bag. Delicious and never spiked me! I only tried the mint, but I’m sure the other flavor was just as good.

7. Parm Crisps

More cheese, no surprise there. Loved these for a salty crunchy snack, although they can be pricey. Aldi has a more affordable version!

8. Nuts

Another snack I always had in my bag or nearby. Almonds, cashews, and macadamia nuts were a staple for me. I liked Costco cashews and macadamia nuts, and the dry roasted almonds from Aldi.

9. Schmidt Old Tyme 647 Bread

This was a staple in our household long before I had gestational diabetes because of the fiber content and how it tastes like regular bread. Was great for avocado toast, sandwiches, etc. Love this stuff!

Helllloooo fiber content!

They have a variety of types of breads too, including english muffins and rolls. I liked the Italian style best, but everything we’ve tried is great!

I grabbed this at my local grocery store, Kroger, Harris Teeter, or Aldi. I think it’s sold pretty much everywhere!

10. Biena Roasted Chickpeas

A good salty, crunchy, fiber snack to keep on hand. Comes in a variety of flavors. I found these in just about every grocery store I think.

11. Bada Bean Bada Boom – Crunchy Roasted Broad Beans

Similar to above, a salty, crunchy, fiber snack. Comes in a variety of flavors. I ordered these online.

12. Roasted Edamame

Probably my favorite of the salty, crunchy, fiber snacks I tried. Macros were on POINT! I ordered these online, but I’ve definitely seen other brands of roasted edamame in store. These were just easy since individually portioned and could throw in my bag or easily grab from the pantry.

13. Quaker Rice Crisps

I found I did pretty well with the individual packs of quaker rice crisps either in cheddar or ranch. I never tried the sweet flavors since they were higher in sugar/carbs. I usually did okay with having 1-2 bags, depending on what I paired it with.

14. Perfect Bar Minis

Another easy protein bar option. Love these! Kinda like dessert.

Those were all of my regular gestational diabetes snacks that I had time and time again and were safe for me just about every time. I hope they give you a few new ideas to try out so you can add more variation to your diet. I know moms say this all the time, and it can feel annoying when you’re in the thick of it, but now that I’ve had my baby, I promise every pick, stick, and annoying gestational diabetes meal was more than worth it.
